Science Communication & Outreach
California Marine Sanctuary Foundation works with state, federal and NGO partners to provide messaging and connections to stakeholder from various interest sectors all aimed at protecting marine resources. Through building communities of stakeholders, CMSF remains on the forefront of marine science communication and conservation.
Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)
CMSF plays a key role in education and outreach efforts for California's network of marine protected areas (MPAs), working with Ocean Protection Council (OPC), California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and thousands of local partners. Through our efforts, the public has gained greater appreciation for California's coastal resources and California's coast, building stewardship for and generating increased awareness of MPAs.
Recently, through funding provided by OPC, CMSF produced the first ever, comprehensive evaluation assessment of MPA education and outreach tools: Evaluating the Effectiveness of Marine Protected Area (MPA) Education and Outreach Tools (2021). Through both state and private funding from OPC and Resources Legacy Fund, CMSF has led signage efforts over the past decade, successfully installing over 400 interpretive signs across the state. In 2022, in partnership with the MPA Collaborative Network, CMSF will be assessing statewide signage needs and evaluate existing signage effectiveness, developing new signage for MPAs across the Network.
MPA education and outreach resources are available through the CMSF-hosted California MPAs website.
Sea Level Rise
CMSF is leading efforts, in partnership with the Ocean Protection Council and May 77 Communications, to develop a statewide sea level rise awareness campaign. We are facilitating the private-public project, serving as science experts, and synthesizing outcomes to meet the state’s needs and constraints. This work will raise public awareness by targeted messaging to key audiences using appropriate tools and channels of communication.
Monitoring and Evaluation
CMSF is committed to understanding the efficacy of all investments, and therefore, incorporates rigorous monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of projects and programs, throughout each stage of implementation.
Recently, with funding provided by OPC, CMSF produced the first ever comprehensive evaluation of MPA outreach tools: Evaluating the Effectiveness of Marine Protected Area (MPA) Education and Outreach Tools (2021). The evaluation assessed the efficacy of select outreach materials in raising awareness of MPAs among key coastal user groups including consumptive and non-consumptive users. In 2022, in partnership with the MPA Collaborative Network, CMSF will be assessing statewide signage needs, and evaluating existing signage effectiveness to inform the development of new MPA signage across the state.
